Art in Progress
Local artist, Nicole Jelicich, let Explore in on the creation of a major work of art which was shipped recently from Sai Kung to Guangzhou. Commissioned by the Shangri-La for a new hotel in the Pazhou district, the NZ-born artist gave them an A3 mock-up of the work for approval and then set about trying to find indoor floor space large enough to accommodate the 6m high by 3.6m wide canvas. Through her network of friends, Nicole found a Sai Kung couple who had a basement which was not only large enough but had natural light – a big plus!
When asked how she worked horizontally on such a large painting, Nicole told Explore that she began work from the A3 page, then “griddled out the first placement of the elements” but after that it was “quite intuitive the way I built up layers of colour and balanced the composition across the canvas”. She lifted it to a vertical position once and then reworked it again as it was very difficult to get a cohesive view of the entire work while it was on the ground.
The final piece was hung in the Shangri-La on January 7th. Their guests will enjoy the final work but only Explore readers will have had a peek at the creative process in action.
