Designs on the Waterfront
SKDCs' Waterfront Renewal Project
EXHIBITION THIS WEEKEND: Sat 14 July 10am-7pm; Sun 15 July 10am-5pm
Students of the design school at the HKIVE (Shatin) have been busy. Their winter term projects were based on the SKDC’s request for suggestions on how to beautify the waterfront. The area was divided into three sections and the students asked to provide detailed design concepts for each.
- the area encompassed by the current bus terminals (soon to be relocated) along the promenade in front of Hoi Pong Square
- the promenade from Hoi Pong Square to Yi Chun Street
- the promenade from Yi Chun Street to the Fish Wholesale Market
A total of 18 teams came up with very innovative designs and the DC was provided with a range of models and plans. One team, consisting of Thomas Ho Ming Chan,
Tammy Chow Hiu, Stephanie Leung Ka YI and Angel Kwok Hoi Wai,
developed a wonderful architectural animation of their proposal which is available on YouTube.com.
Most of the students involved graduated in June with a Diploma in Interior Design from the Institute which is part of the Vocational Training Council (VTC). About half will be furthering their education in university design programs in the fall and the others have already begun their career with jobs in the field. Each team had obviously spent a great deal of time researching not only the current environment in Sai Kung but also its history and culture. Even though none actually live in the Sai Kung area, they talked about the issues confronting our community with conviction and a unique understanding that was most impressive. As Mrs. Leo Lee Oil-lin, Deputy Executive Director of the VTC stated in the exhibition catalogue “to them, the participation in this project was an opportunity of a lifetime to learn and to participate in community development”.
A Town Hall exhibition took place 14-15 July, giving residents and visitors the unprecedented opportunity to look at the designs and comment.
For those who were not able to attend the exhibition, contact the SK District office for copies of the “Waterfront Renewal Project. Schematic Design Works Collection” catalogue.
