Porsche Leads Adventure Race

Sai Kungers Triumph

They ran, they swam, they kayaked, they climbed and….they collapsed. But, in the spirit of the event, they explored their potential by challenging themselves to beat the environment and overcome obstacles.  Strategy, leadership and teamwork were employed by each individual in addition to their own physical and mental strength.

Eighty-five teams took part in the Porsche Outward Bound Adventure Race on Sunday 12 March, a record for this, the 5th year of the race. Funds raised will be used to support the work of Outward Bound HK, providing high quality development training to Hong Kong’s youth to prepare them to be future leaders.  Courses for underprivileged youth (including single parents, youth at risk and HK’s “invisible youth”) are provided through organizations like Caritas, Chinese YMCA, HK Christian Service, HK Phab Association, and the HK Society for the Deaf

The 20km race started at the Tai Mong Tsai headquarters of Outward Bound HK and finished at Sai Kung Waterfront.  Porsche, the title sponsor of the event, led the race at 8AM with their Porsche Cayenne, complete with Seiko timer.  The same car raced to the finish line to be on display on the waterfront at the end of the race.

Sai Kunger, Vincent Yim, one of the members of the team that won the “Master Men” category, says that he “was an Outward Bounder…so I have the spirit of OBS, willing to try, willing to challenge myself”.  He says he likes “tough sport…you can see a lot of things, like yourself, different people as different characters…In this tough environment you can’t hide yourself…you can build up your confidence and your potential deep inside.”

Linda Sharp, co-owner of Sabai Day Spa in Sai Kung and a member of the team that came second runner-up in the Open Ladies category, says she “would definitely do it again – it was fun, challenging and interesting and the time flew by”. Her suggestion to other Sai Kungers for next year: “be brave and try something new – challenge yourself!”

Our thanks to Outward Bound HK for photos of this year's race. Race results and more photos are on the special Adventure Race 2006 pages of their website.
