Fancy a dim sum lunch but don’t feel up to the usual hustle and bustle of a traditional tea-house setting? Why not try Beach Cuisine at Sha Ha, a stone’s throw away from the old Beach Hotel?
Friends who “discovered” this eatery recently recommended it and so, we decided to check it out ourselves. Located in a tranquil setting by the seaside, with a view looking out to Sai Kung’s outlying islands and the High Island dam beyond, we found that this quiet spot makes a good alternative eating place to sample the traditional delights of a Cantonese dim sum brunch – cha siu bao (roast pork bun), har gao (shrimp dumpling), chun kuen (spring rolls) and more… The menu is in both English and Chinese so don’t panic if you can’t read Chinese.
As it was lunch time when we got there, we only tried the dim sum dishes but judging from their tanks of live seafood, they are obviously set up to serve seafood dishes regularly too. When we were leaving the staff were just about to sit down to what looked like a really sumptuous meal themselves – a celebration feast of some kind, they said.
The dim sum was good, and lived up to its recommendation. Although a local friend told us afterwards that their prices may be slightly higher than some other dim sum places in Sai Kung Town, we would not hesitate to go back there again, especially during the week when there would hopefully be less of a lunch crowd.
Prices:
Dim sum: from $12-30 per dish
Rice and noodles: from $40-78 per dish
Snacks, such as chicken wings and deep-fried squid: from $28-32
Getting to Beach Cuisine from Sai Kung:
On foot – from Sai Kung Public Pier, walk north along the sea front promenade
By car – turn off Tai Mong Tsai Road at the entrance leading to the old Beach Hotel. The ample parking on the right at the bottom of the road is free on weekdays.
