The Cheng Family ancestral hall in Tso Wo Hang, a small village in Tai Mong Tsai, Sai Kung, revealed its new face to residents this past Sunday. On an auspicious day, the Chengs, who are the indigenous villagers here, held a ceremony and a lunch to celebrate the renovation of the old hall as well as the Buddha’s Birthday. At the same time, four new houses that had recently been completed on land previously occupied by some old Chinese-style houses were also a cause for celebrations.
Hong Kong’s Antiquities and Monuments Office had this ancestral hall, village houses and the enclosing wall on the agenda last year, as a “new item to be assessed”. It was one of three Sai Kung “items” being assessed, the other two being the salt pan ruins on Yim Tin Tsai and the Sai Kung Lok Yuk Kindergarten.
Besides the local village residents and Village Representatives from all the other villages in Sai Kung, several expat residents
were also invited to join in the festivities and lunch for this event. Julie King, who has lived Tso Wo Hang for 32 years, mentioned that she has seen great changes during that time, from a village of very few houses to one that is continuously expanding.
Other expats present at the party included Catherine Giblin, Vince Christian, Nanna and Kito Barros, Zeny and Patrick McDonald, Jack King and George Salamon.
Thanks to Julie King for the photos.
