Dolphins in Sai Kung

From the Explore Mail Box:

“Do you ever get the feeling that life is not fair?! After getting off the boat at 2pm last Saturday [in June] and saying hello to a group of French diver friends of ours who were just on their way out to Shelter Island, guess what should arrive in our in-box on Monday morning ?!”

Damon Rose of Splash Hong Kong, Sai Kung

Damon was referring to the above picture of a female dolphin taken by Emmanuel Lucien Anguille of French Divers, Hong Kong.

According to the WWF, studies indicate about 180 Chinese White Dolphins live in the waters around Hong Kong but the vast majority of them are seen off the west coast of Lantau, with a smaller number on Lantau’s east coast.

Explore has not heard of a sighting of these beautiful marine mammals in Sai Kung since 2001, when sailors and people living on boats in the area saw four pink dolphins off  Pak Sha Wan (Hebe Haven).  If you, or any of your friends or colleagues have seen one (or a pod), please send us an email and photos if you're lucky enough to get them!
